The Meaning Of Yallingup

The name is somewhat unusual and is derived from the Aboriginal word that translates to mean ‘place of love’. It is a truly beautiful place, so you can understand the choice of name. The hills flow down to the beaches and the caves really are stunning. The caves at Yallingup were discovered in 1899 by settlers from Europe, and this instantly made it a place that people wanted to see. Because of this, in 1903 ‘Caves House’ was built so that visitors to the caves had somewhere to stay. This was the start of the tourist industry there. Because of the outstanding natural beauty it also became a popular honeymoon destination, initially for couples from Perth. The ease with which people could visit was further aided by the construction of the railways system by the group settlement scheme, meaning it became much easier to travel into the area.
